Software Engineer

What do we do?

Key ESG is an early-stage startup that wants to find an engaged engineer to help us bring our product vision to life. At this stage, you will be able to have a big say in the architecture and the chance to learn new technology as we find the product/market fit.

Our mission is to help businesses measure, manage and improve their Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) performance. ESG covers the impact a company has on its environment, employees, customers and the communities where it operates. By using a variety of metrics, we can evaluate companies on how sustainable they are, and help them to improve. This role offers the chance to blend a modern tech stack, with a commercial startup that has a genuine “tech for good” mission.

Why join us?

Make an impact – helping businesses to improve their ESG metrics has a tangible impact on the world.

Freedom to innovate – as an early-stage startup, we will succeed through innovation. Our core product is in its infancy, so you will shaping the future architecture. This is a product where the fun bits are yet to be built!

Whether you want to move to other areas of engineering and data science, or take a leadership path, we will work with you to create opportunities for this.

Technical Skills

We understand that developers all have very diverse career journeys, skills and interests, so we are keen to find someone that will bring their own unique set of capabilities to our team. We don’t have too many fixed requirements at this stage, other than strong experience with the JavaScript programming language. Frontend, backend or full stack will work for us, and we also appreciate that this can change over time – the main priority is that we can keep the enthusiasm high as we evolve together.

The interview process (TBC):

Stage 1 (30 minutes) – Initial chat with Ian Read (VP of Engineering) to get an overview of what you are looking for in your career goals and aspirations, as well as an understanding of how we can work together.

Technical stage (60 minutes) – you can choose this! We aim to have a low-pressure session that gives you the best possible chance to demonstrate your technical ability. We have two options:

Option 1 – present us some of your open source work, a side project or even another take-home tech task you built, and talk us through what it does, how you went about building it and what you are most proud of.

Option 2 – live coding challenges. Nothing too complicated; you can choose between either a React app that interacts with an API, or a Node-based program that processes some input from a file and outputs the correct answers. Ideally looking for a test-driven approach for both. Feel free to have a test example running locally to speed up your process.

Final round (30-60 minutes) – a final chat with the founders and VP of Product.
